Greening Australia's Women in Science

Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science – a chance to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. From improving health to combatting climate change, all science related subjects depend on harnessing all talent. This means getting more women working in these fields. Diversity in research expands the pool of talented researchers, bringing in fresh perspectives and creativity.

We’re taking this opportunity to celebrate our very own women in science and their fantastic contributions to the environment, communities and nature, by highlighting three here.

Dr Lynise Wearne

Lynise is our Science and Programs Leader for the Eastern Region. As a highly skilled and passionate ecologist, she quickly became the backbone of our Reef Aid program and is always striving to ensure science is used to achieve maximise results on the ground. Prior to joining Greening Australia, she gained 15 years’ experience working within professional environmental firms and then as a Senior Ecologist for the Queensland Environment. Lynise has had a huge impact on our work to save the Great Barrier Reef, and without her outstanding contribution, Reef Aid would not be where it is today.

Dr Elisa Raulings

Elisa is passionate about combining the art of restoration with solid science to ensure her work makes a difference. Before becoming part of our Programs and Science Team, she managed our Victorian Conservation Planning and Science Unit and has been proud to work alongside many of Australia’s leading scientists to understand how we can create better outcomes for people and nature. Elisa has developed restoration models for aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and rigorously builds in climate change allowances to increase the resilience of our landscapes in uncertain futures.

Samantha Craigie

Samantha has played an important role in the development of our Western Sydney Seed Production Area, sourcing and hand collecting native seeds to help build the diverse range of plant species that now supports our restoration work in NSW. She has a Bachelor of Science and has been a keen restoration ecologist for many years. Samantha truly embodies Greening Australia’s values and behaviours.

These three wonder women are a few of the dedicated female contingent at Greening Australia who are working across the country. We salute them all.
